A practical landed-cost and pricing framework for CBD, CBG, and CBN retail products without unsupported margin assumptions.
There is no universal markup for hemp products. A useful pricing decision begins with documented landed cost, realistic demand, and the cost of maintaining compliant inventory. Claims that a category guarantees a particular margin or market share are not a substitute for an account's own records.
Build the landed-cost file
For each SKU, record unit cost, freight, packaging or labeling charges, payment fees, receiving labor, required testing or document-review costs, insurance allocation, damage allowance, and taxes or fees that apply. Separate one-time setup costs from recurring costs so later reorders are not compared incorrectly with an opening run.
Price only a reviewable product
Our CBD, CBG, and CBN concepts are inquiry-only, use a zero formulated THC target, and require finished-package COA and documentation review. A low quote does not compensate for a mismatched lot, incomplete label, or missing package-level THC result. Include the time and cost of responsible intake in the commercial decision.
Use contribution dollars, not a borrowed percentage
Calculate expected revenue less the variable costs attached to the unit. Then test several prices against the store's actual sales history and customer context. Include expected markdowns, damage, expiry, and returns. Do not build the plan around a supplier's unsupported sell-through forecast.
Model regulatory transitions
Virginia's 2 mg total-THC-per-package ceiling took effect August 15, 2026, when the former 25:1 allowance was repealed. A federal definition change scheduled for November 12, 2026 would exclude final hemp-derived cannabinoid products containing more than 0.4 mg total THC per container. Inventory that cannot be supported under applicable rules can create write-down and disposition costs. Conservative lot sizes and clear supplier remedies reduce that exposure.
Compare quotes on equal terms
- Use the same package count, net contents, formula version, and testing scope.
- Confirm whether freight, setup, artwork, samples, and testing are included.
- Record lead time, expiration dating, return terms, and minimum quantities.
- Identify who bears the cost of a failed, late, damaged, or nonconforming lot.
- Request written change-control terms for formulas, inputs, and packaging.
Review performance without overclaiming
Track units received, units sold, days on hand, markdowns, returns, and gross contribution by lot. Use enough history to avoid treating an opening-week result as a durable trend. Retailers can then adjust order size and price based on their own evidence rather than a generalized category claim.
